Are you Happy? or Do you Love Me?

Which of these these of questions motivates you and steers your life?  By the way, the “Me” in the title is Jesus … He is the One asking the question “Do you love Me”  but guess who is asking the question “Are you Happy”?  It’s the world, the flesh and the Devil … it’s your sin nature that nags you with the question “Are  you happy?”.  Your sin nature is constantly bombarding your mind with thoughts of what will make your happy in this world.  It is really shouting to you all the time asking…. “what can I get out of life to maximizes my pleasure, my possessions and my pride?”  While the born gain Holy Spirit nature is quietly calling out to you “Do you Love Me?”  … will you follow Me? … will you obey Me? … “Do you trust Jesus with your happiness?”

The only way to get through this world is to live the “die2live” life of Jesus Christ … dying daily to the voice of the world, the flesh and the Devil (sin nature) and living to the voice of the Holy Spirit (the new nature of Christ within you).  You must constantly be “on guard” to tune out your enemy … your old sin nature … and stay tuned into your new Spirit nature in Jesus Christ.  I’ve noticed in the morning that my old nature seems to be “rested up” from a good night’s sleep and it calls to me loudly “you’re in charge … stay in bed … do what you want”.  Sometimes, I even yell at myself to “shut up”, so I can hear the voice of God calling me to “serve Christ … get up and show up for duty”.

Though the “die2live” life is “hard” because you have to deny your sin nature, it is really “easy” because Jesus does not demand that you try and please others and He does not demand that you reach goals so you can compare yourself with others.  You simply follow Jesus and you do the work He has prepared for you, using the resources and power that He has provided to do the work.  Go ahead, press the “Easy” button and hear the Spirit of God within in you say … “That was easy”.  And then give thanks to God and give Him the glory.  And when your cup runs over, bless others as you have been blessed.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows.  – Psalm 23:5

It’s God desire is to bless His children.  God is the true prodigal parent who desires to lavish His riches upon His children and He does not run out of blessings.   But God does not bless His children so they can become “Diva Christians” who use the benefit for their own selfish purposes and focus the attention onto themselves.  For it is written “To whom much is given, much is required” (Luke 12:48).  God’s desire is to bless you so you can be the example to the world of God’s glory.  The blessing may be His comfort that you receive under persecution, trail and sickness but God is always pouring out His blessings on those who are faithful toward Him.  The point I am trying to make is that because God’s desire is to bless His children, we “frustrate” God when we sin.  Yes, God forgives sin that is confessed but He also disciplines those He loves, however like a loving parent He would much rather bless His children then have to discipline them.

You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever. – Psalm 16:11

The bottom line is that in order to be “happy” you must be “holy”.  Happiness is not something you can obtain by your own effort but happiness is a byproduct of living a holy life, by trusting and obeying God.  In addition to happiness God gives His children who are in fellowship with Him, peace and assurance.  And furthermore, a life that is seeking to know Jesus and serve Him is also storing up rewards in Heaven that you will enjoy for all eternity!  And guess what … in Heaven that Easy button will be even easier to press because our hand will no longer have any sin nature to hinder it as we reach toward God.
