    1. Every person is a SINNER, we are born that way (Romans 3:23). Anyone who is NOT saved from SIN by belief in Jesus Christ at the CLOSE of the Age is CAST into the Lake of Fire to burn for all Eternity (Rev 20:11-15)! What of homosexually ones that claims to know Christ salvation? Homosexuality’s is a SIN but so is ADULTERY (Matthew 5:27-28). Only God truly KNOWS if a person has Repented/Believed/Accepted/Received Salvation in Jesus Christ.

You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. – Matthew 5:27-28

Repentance is a “CHANGE of MIND” concerning your identity as a SINNER before God … Each person is either an unrepentant SINNER who is caught up in their Self Indulgent Nature (SIN) way of thinking, believing that they aren’t too bad (I’m OK, you’re OK and I did it my way) … or a repentant SINNER who acknowledges that they are born with a REBELLIOUS nature toward God that is NOT OK and they CAN’T fix themselves, so they RECEIVE the Savior Jesus for Forgiveness of the SIN and Eternal LIFE with Him (I’m NOT OK, you’re NOT OK and I did it God’s way).

Repentance and Faith are really one in the same thing called “Belief in Christ” or two sides of the same coin of “Salvation in Christ”. Both Repentance and Faith are GIFTS from God’s Amazing Grace to bring Salvation (which Salvation is ALSO a gift from God). Repentance is a past view of your present identity in Christ and Faith is a future view of your present identity in Christ. In other words, Repentance describes who you remember you once were (a SINNER lost in SIN apart from Christ) and Salvation describes who you desire to be (a SINNER saved by the Grace of God by belief in Jesus Christ).

      1. Dear Roger (I love the reference to singing!), I used to feel the same way about this topic and have come 180 degrees after attending a conservative seminary, which was pretty shocking to me. The accusations of damnation being taught in class did not feel consistent with the teaching of the gates never closing and gnashing of teeth outside New Jerusalem in Revelation 21/22.

Upon further research, I found some of the clobber verses weren’t actually about marriage and sex as we know it as a society. Sodom, according to Ezekiel (I think of Ezekiel as the compass for all of Scripture), was burnt for not being generous enough. A town in Scripture is a household or family line, so that implies the female side or soul was not generous and would not share. This is Lot’s wife. Lot’s wife was not generous, but Lot is still redeemed in 2 Pet 2. Sex in the Sodom story is also confounding. It actually means teaching or learning from another’s experience. That sex is a child, as a man and woman become one flesh. That child carries on the traits to a redemptive family line.

Just as confusing are the terms and meaning of Man and Woman. We conflate these as a male and female person, but this is a spirit/soul relationship. Two mature spirits must be had before one can be whole. That mature spirit is male. The human soul is the child (Galatians 4:1; Revelation 18:11-13; Isaiah 65:20). Two mature spirits is completion, which is becoming an adult/elder/redeemed/freed (Like Lydia in Acts). That adultery is to be delayed – just as Jonathan had to die for a sin he did not knowingly commit. The unevangelized are saved the same way. Stay asleep for the duration, though God heard the cries and limited man’s life to 120 years in Gen 6.

I guess I hope our society will heal just a bit if the truth of God’s word can be seen. The church is divisive because of clobber verses. I have so many more verses like Job 21:29-30, Romans 4 and 11 that say everyone is saved as offspring of the one person who took the oath – Abraham. We are all his seed, Jew and Gentile, made in the image of God. 2 Pet 2 says God forgives the fallen angels, Noah, Lot, everyone. It also mocks us as unable to understand. Paul says we are fools. Jesus says calling someone a fool is murder. Since Paul murdered all of us, where does that leave us? Saved by Christ and our ancestor’s faith in God. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus, knowing/being the law, told us not to take oaths, even to God.

Saul was like us, he had the scales of judgement over his eyes, too. When those scales fell off, he began saving people. Let the scales fall so the glory of God can be shared.

I’d love to share more, but hope this is enough to help folks think about the backstory of Scripture a bit more.

        Crossing in God’s unfathomable grace,
        Mark

P.S. if you’d like to dialogue on this, let me know. It is much, much deeper than even this.

        1. Hey brother Mark, From what I have read in your comment, you have “clobbered” the interpretation of some verses. In reference to calling someone “a fool”, Jesus was warning against justifying anger against someone because of personal prejudice or personal offense or a lack of understanding like hating someone because of the color of someone’s skin or because they slapped you on the face or because they have ideas different from you or do things differently than you but we are to judge with RIGHTEOUS judgement and EXPOSE EVIL and “HATE EVIL” but Vengeance belongs to the Lord! Blessings to you, Roger

Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true. – Acts 17:11

Here are commentaries on Matthew 5:22 from Bereans who have gone before us —> https://biblehub.com/commentaries/matthew/5-22.htm

Here’s a good teaching on the topic – Whoever Says “You Fool!” Shall Be in Danger of Hell Fire —> https://faithalone.org/grace-in-focus-articles/whoever-says-you-fool-shall-be-in-danger-of-hell-fire/

But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. — Matthew 5:22

If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” – John 7:23-24

You who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked. – Psalm 97:10

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. – Ephesians 5:11-12

Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. – Romans 12:19

With regards to Paul and his reference to Christians being “Fools for Christ” … he is referring to what unbelievers call Christians, which is the reason for their judgement to hell fire because unbelievers do NOT believe the gospel of Jesus Christ and are NOT saved. And Paul is explaining to the Christians in Corinthians that they are CARNAL for arguing over which teacher of the gospel is better Paul or Apollos. They are competing to see who is the best teacher concerning Christ’s words instead of competing to see who is the humblest servant of applying Christ’s word in service to others.

And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. – Matthew 23:10-12

for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal? – 1 Corinthians 3:3-4

1 Corinthians 3:18Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; 20and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours: 22whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come—all are yours. 23And you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! – 1 Corinthians 4:10

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ. – Philippians 3:8

1 Corinthians 1:18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

20Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
